Why Bespoke

Made for the room, not adapted to it

Bespoke carpentry means the piece is designed and made for one specific room rather than selected from a range. Every dimension is taken from the room itself, which is why bespoke work runs cleanly to the ceiling, into alcoves and around chimney breasts without the fillers and dead corners that modular furniture leaves behind.

Dublin homes make that difference obvious. Period rooms are rarely square, ceiling heights change from floor to floor, and newer builds trade floor area for storage. Furniture built to standard sizes fights those conditions. Furniture built to the room uses them.

  • Every dimension measured from the room, not taken from a catalogue
  • Alcoves, chimney breasts and sloping ceilings resolved cleanly
  • Timber, finish and detailing chosen for the property
  • Scribed and adjusted on site so nothing sits proud or gaps

Plain Language

Carpentry, joinery and cabinet making: the difference

Most people use the three terms interchangeably. The trade uses them precisely, and the distinction is worth knowing before you commission anything, because it tells you what a workshop is actually set up to do.

Carpentry The broad craft of working with timber, traditionally including structural work and first fix.
Joinery Fitted timber elements made in a workshop: doors, stairs, panelling and built-in furniture.
Cabinet making The finest end of the scale, producing furniture and cabinetry to close tolerances.

A bespoke project almost always draws on all three. What matters is whether they sit under one roof. When carpentry and cabinetry are split between separate trades, the joints between them are where projects go wrong. Our workshop covers the full range, which is why the detail holds from the structural work through to the final finish.

The Work

What we make

Bespoke carpentry covers everything in a house that is built rather than bought. Kitchens and wardrobes are usually the starting point, but because the same workshop makes everything, storage and detail can be carried through the whole house in one consistent language.

Media walls, libraries, wall panelling, home offices, utility rooms and one-off furniture are all made to measure alongside the larger commissions, so the finish, timber and detail stay consistent from room to room rather than being assembled from separate suppliers.

  • Handmade kitchens, islands, hidden pantries and wine walls
  • Fitted and walk-in wardrobes, dressing rooms and alcove storage
  • Media walls, libraries, shelving and window seats
  • Wall panelling, wainscoting and fluted or slatted detailing
  • Home offices, studies, utility rooms and boot rooms

Our Workshop

Designed, made and installed by one team

Velvet Strand Design designs, manufactures and installs from its own workshop in Dublin 15, with the same team responsible from first measure to final adjustment. Finishes are sprayed in controlled workshop conditions rather than applied on a live site, which is a large part of why the surface holds up.

Keeping the work in house means the detailing stays consistent across a whole house, changes can be resolved during the build rather than after it, and there is one accountable point of contact rather than a chain of subcontractors. Having grown out of the MDS Construction family, we are as comfortable reproducing period mouldings and panel proportions as we are detailing handleless cabinetry and pocket doors.

  • Hardwoods such as walnut and white oak, selected and matched across a run
  • Satin-lacquered and hand-painted finishes, sprayed in the workshop
  • Textured lacquers, fluted detailing and handleless fronts
  • Integrated lighting designed in from the start, cabling concealed in the carcass
  • Soft-close mechanisms and precision hardware specified to the door weight

Why It Pays to Commission a Carpenter, Not Buy a Product

Fitted furniture bought from a range is designed to suit the largest number of rooms possible. Bespoke carpentry is designed to suit one. That is the whole difference, and it is the reason a commissioned piece still looks right in a Dublin home years later, while a fitted range tends to date with the decade it was bought in.

Carpentry, cabinetry and fit-out from one accountable workshop

Velvet Strand Design work as a bespoke carpentry and fit-out partner for homeowners, architects and interior designers across Dublin. Kitchens, wardrobes, panelling and furniture are made in the same workshop and installed by the same team, so the quality and detail stay consistent throughout the home.

  • Carpentry, joinery and cabinet making handled under one roof
  • Period-appropriate and contemporary detailing to suit the property
  • Workshop-sprayed finishes rather than site-applied paint
  • Design, manufacture and installation handled by one accountable team
For homeowners One team from first measure to final adjustment, and one person to call.
For interior designers An execution partner who works to your design intent rather than around it.
For architects Workshop drawings issued for approval and buildability flagged before site.
For whole-home projects One finish and detail language from kitchen through to wardrobes and living spaces.
